2016 SEASON STATISTICS AND RESULTS
MALIBU, Calif. - The top-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball squad remains undefeated at home with two sweeps to open the Zuma Classic at Zuma Beach this Saturday. The Waves swept both CSU Bakersfield and fellow West Coast Conference opponent Loyola Marymount with 5-0 decisions to open tournament play.
The Waves (13-1) swept both teams with five straight-set victories throughout the day. The Waves four and five pairs, freshmen pair Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) and Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) and senior Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Sarah Seiber (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona) remained undefeated throughout the day, both amassing a 14-0 record as a pair for the 2016 season thus far.
To start the tournament this morning against CSU Bakersfield (2-8), Waves three's pair sophomore Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) and freshman Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) dominated the sand towards a 21-6, 21-8 victory over Sophie Flemion and Kelsee Sawyer to put the Waves up 1-0.
Caputo led the match with 11 kills and seven solid service aces, while Quiggle smashed down eight kills and added four aces to the effort.
Then, Pepperdine's four's pair Roh and Wilson opened the dual with 21-9, 21-5 set wins over Kayla Tinker and Ally Barber to advance the Waves to a 2-0. Throughout two sets of play, Roh led the pair with 13 kills, three blocks and two service aces. Wilson produced six kills and two aces as well.
The Waves fives' pair, Cash and Seiber brought the Waves up to a 3-0 advantage and clinched the overall win with the next victory after establishing a 21-9 and 21-7 domination over Katie Dunbar-Lome and Amanda Schoene. Cash led the pair with 10 kills and added an impressive nine service aces towards the effort. Seiber was good for nine kills herself, while posting two aces and one block throughout the match.
Next to finish in the first match were the Waves on court one, senior Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and freshman Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS). Racich belted down 13 kills and six aces to lead the Waves, while Dyer was good for 10 kills and a solo ace and block for the win. The duo bested Sydney Haynes and Carol Grasso with 21-13 and 21-14 decisions for the win.
Pepperdine completed the first sweep of the morning on court two, as junior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and freshman Kaity Bailey (Ojai, Calif./Villanova Preparatory School) put down Edithza Urias and Jocelyn Rodriguez 21-6 and 21-17. Bailey powered down 14 kills, three aces and two blocks throughout two sets and Knudsen finished the match with nine kills.
Pepperdine would not stop winning in the first match, however, as the Waves crushed down on PCH Cup-rivals Loyola Marymount (2-12) with another 5-0 sweep to end the afternoon. Roh and Wilson were among the first to finish yet again, putting up a pair of 21-10 sets to dominate Sara Kovac and Sasha Dominique. Roh led the squad with 14 kills, four aces and two blocks and Wilson was good for nine kills and an ace to close out the day.
Caputo and Quiggle also crushed their opposition with 21-12 and 21-17 wins over Jamie Lea and Tatiana Schlange to put the Waves at a 2-0 advantage early. Quiggle led the team with 13 kills and Caputo led the effort with a strong seven aces, while adding 10 kills and a block.
The Waves' fives' pair once again clinched the overall win with a 21-12, 21-16 victory over Kristen Castellanos and Nicky Kevorken. Both Cash and Seiber were solid again as a duo, with Seiber leading with 14 kills and three aces and Cash adding two blocks and 13 kills as well.
Dyer and Racich put the Waves up 4-0 shortly after with a 21-14, 21-15 victory over Avery Bush and Rachelle Suaava. Dyer boasted 12 kills, one block and an ace, while Racich led the effort with four aces and amassed eight kills in the effort.
Last to finish out were Bailey and Knudson on court two in an exciting finish to the successful day. The pair first posted a 21-12 win in the first set. In the second set, the two duos went point-for-point to the 15-15 mark. LMU started their attempt to secure the win late, putting gin a 20-19 lead over the Waves late in the set.
Pepperdine would not give up, however, and came back to tie the set at 20-20 to extend the match to extra points. After going up on the next service, Bailey clinched the win with a monster block from the middle to give the pair a final 23-21 set win on the day. Bailey was solid at the net with four blocks, while boasting five service aces and 11 kills. Knudsen led the pair with 13 kills and added three aces of her own to post the win.
The Waves' sixth pair, Leanna Schroeder (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) also played during the second match against Arizona's Tyler Lucas and Nikki Attea, boasting a 21-12 and 21-16 pair of wins to close out the day.
