2016 STATS AND RESULTS
MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball team closed out home play this Sunday morning with a 3-2 win over No. 6-ranked Arizona to earn the Zuma Classic title. The Waves swept day one with 5-0 victories over CSU Bakersfield and Loyola Marymount, before clinching the title with a 3-2 win over Arizona to close out the tournament.
Seniors Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS), Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) and Sophie Asprey (Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian School/Tulane) were honored after the match by the team and families, taking home a bottle of Zuma Beach sand after playing their final matches at home this weekend before hitting the road to close out regular season and post season.
With the win, the Waves are now 14-1 in the 2016 campaign, and have amassed an untarnished 9-0 record at home this season.
To open the morning against the Wildcats (9-2), Waves' freshmen pair Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) and Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) secured the first win of the day to put the Waves up 1-0 with a 21-10, 21-8 domination over Mia Mason and Kalei Mau. Wilson led the squad with 15 kills and she and Roh posted two aces throughout the match. Roh was also good for a solid five blocks and nine kills in the effort. With the win, the Waves remained undefeated as a partnership, amassing a perfect 15-0 record as they head into the next competition.
The Waves then extended the lead to 2-0 with a 21-18, 21-13 win on court three as sophomore Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) and freshman Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) put down Olivia Macdonald and Sam Manley. Caputo was strong on the offensive with 14 kills and two aces, while adding a block, and Quiggle ended the day with four aces from the service line and nine kills.
Arizona then took their first match of the day, with a win on court one to close the gap and give the Waves only a one-point cushion with two courts still in play.
Junior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and freshman Kaity Bailey (Ojai, Calif./Villanova Preparatory School) were up to the task, though, picking up a dual-clinching win with a 21-18, 21-17 result over Jianna Bonomi and Kat Schulz. The victory propelled the Waves to a 3-1 advantage and clinched the day. Knudsen dominated the sand with 18 kills and one ace, while Bailey was also instrumental in the win with 14 kills, two aces and a block towards the effort.
Cash and junior Sarah Seiber (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona) had tough competition on court five. After falling in the first set by an extra point 23-25 decision, the Waves rallied back in the second set to tie the match with a 21-11 win over Hailey Devlin and Mackenzie Kleespies.
The duos went point-for-point in the third and final set, but the opposition picked up the advantage late, eventually coming away with a 15-10 win to close down the set and put the Waves win at 3-2 on the day. Seiber finished the day with 21 kills, three aces and one block and Cash was strong at the net as usual with three blocks, 10 kills and two aces.
The Waves' sixth pair, Leanna Schroeder (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) also picked up a win today, with a 21-12, 21-14 victory over Tyler Lucas and Nikki Attea.
Next, the Waves will travel to Hermosa Beach to compete in the USAV Hermosa Beach Tournament on April 9 and 10. On April 9, the Waves will challenge Long Beach State and USC in dual matches, and on April 10, Pepperdine will compete in a pairs tournament.
