MALIBU, Calif. - Ryan Wilson and Max Gamboa combined for the Pepperdine baseball team's second straight shutout of San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, as the Waves downed the Dons 7-0.
The Pepperdine offense broke the game open late, scoring five runs in the final two innings to move the Waves to 13-12 overall and 4-4 in West Coast Conference play. San Francisco falls to 8-21, 3-5 WCC.
The Waves scored first in the second inning, thanks to a couple of two-out hits. Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) doubled down the left-field line and then was brought home by a Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) single through the right side, sliding under the tag at home.
Pepperdine added a run in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a Don error to go up 2-0. Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) singled home the runner from second to give the Waves some insurance.
Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) tossed 4.0 strong innings in the start, giving up just one hit while striking out eight. He gave way to Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS), who tossed 5.0 scoreless innings of his own to preserve the shutout and pick up the win. Gamboa struck out six and walked just one, while giving up only two hits. Wilson did not record a walk in the games as the two Pepperdine pitchers allowed just six baserunners all game. Only two of those Don runners got past first base.
The Waves offense was back at it in the seventh, as Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) greeted a new USF pitcher with an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game. Pepperdine loaded the bases with two outs and got a single from Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) and bases-loaded walk from Fornaci to plate two more runs.
Pepperdine tacked on two more in the eighth courtesy of a two-run homer by Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS). It was Barnett's second long ball of the year.
The Waves posted 12 hits in the game to just three for USF. Kanfer, Barnett Matt Crowder (Atherton, Calif.//BYU) and Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) all had two-hit days. Barnett's two RBI led all players and Gelalich scored three times to lead the way.
Thomas Ponticelli took the loss for the Dons, giving up eight hits and three earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. USF went through four pitchers on the day.
The Waves and Dons will wrap their series up tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Malibu, as Pepperdine goes for the sweep. That game can be seen live on TheW.tv.
