MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but couldn't hold on against UCLA on Tuesday afternoon, falling 10-6 to the Bruins.

The Waves drop to 18-17 with the loss, while UCLA moves to 16-18. Pepperdine posted 15 hits in the wild game, while the Bruins had 17.

It was all Waves early as the home team scored in each of the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) and Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) singled in runs in the first and second. Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) hit yet another RBI single in the third and then the Waves scored on an error to make it 4-0.

UCLA came back with a run in the fourth and then broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth inning. The Bruins batted around and posted six hits to score their seven runs in the frame.

The teams traded runs over the final three innings, with Gelalich hitting a solo-homer in the eighth to make it 9-5. Each team scored in the ninth and the Waves loaded the bases to get the tying run to the plate with one out, but a pair of popups ended the game.

Justin Hooper picked up the win for UCLA, moving to 1-0 on the year after his 1.0 inning pitched in the fifth. The Bruins used eight pitchers in the game and Pepperdine used six. Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Catherdral Catholic HS) took the loss.

Gelalich was 4-for-5 on the day, with a homer, a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Anderson went 3-for-5 with two RBI as well. Kort Peterson and Eric Filia each had three hit days for UCLA.

The Waves will be back in action on Friday when they open up a three-game series against Portland in Malibu. All three games can be seen live on TheW.tv.
