MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine shortstop Manny Jefferson picked up the Waves' first West Coast Conference Player of the Week Award on Monday after a putting on an impressive offensive display last week.
Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) led the team with six hits, four of which cleared the fence to give him a league-leading nine long balls on the year. He slugged 1.059 in four starts last week and hit .353.
Jefferson started the week off with some near game-saving heroics, forcing extra innings at USC with a two-out home run in the top of the ninth inning. He went 3-for-5 against the Trojans, driving in two runs and scoring one.
After driving in a run in the Waves opener at Santa Clara, Jefferson had a monster game to close the series, hitting two homers and driving in five runs. Jefferson went 2-for-4 in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning after the Waves fell behind 6-0 early. He then drove in the game-winning runs with a three-run shot in the seventh inning to put Pepperdine ahead 9-7.
Overall the Waves' right-handed slugger drove in eight runs on the week and scored five. He is second on the team for the season with a .319 average at the plate. Coming into this season Jefferson had a total of seven career home runs.
