TAMPA, Fla. - The 53rd-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis squad garnered the first win of the USF Quad Tourney, a tournament hosted by South Florida, this Saturday afternoon after defeating Florida Atlantic by a 5-1 decision.
After securing the doubles point with two quick wins, the Waves (6-7, 1-0 WCC) dominated singles play with the fourth and fifth matches finishing simultaneously for the 5-1 result over FAU (8-10, 0-2 CCSA).
To open doubles play, Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./Fusion Academy) and freshman Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) dominated Gerald Nickerson and Stefan Burnett with a 6-2 victory to give the Waves the first advantage of the day.
Waves' sophomore duo Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) and Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) then clinched the doubles point to bring the Waves up 1-0 heading into singles play. The pair put downed FAU's Joao Gauer and Remi Chancerel with a 6-4 final mark.
Freshman Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS) then brought the Waves advantage to 2-0 after putting down Alexander Gitin with a 6-1, 6-4 result in the number six singles position.
Iamachkine continued to help the Waves effort with a pair of 6-2 sets to defeat Iganacio Jimenez in the number five singles position before FAU picked up the team's first win of the day on court four to put the score at 3-1 in the Waves' favor.
Two of the three final matches finished at the same time, resulting in two more wins for the Waves for a 5-1 finish on the afternoon.
First, Menichella defeated Chancerel with a 6-4, 6-3 final decision, before junior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) ended the day with a long 7-5, 6-4 final mark for the victory.
