MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped its series finale to San Diego on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-2 in a West Coast Conference matchup.
The Waves fall to 10-12 overall, 2-4 WCC with the loss, while San Diego moves to 15-11 overall, 3-3 WCC.
The Toreros jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first courtesy of a two-run homer from Ryan Kirby. San Diego would then tack on four more runs in the third inning, chase Waves' starter Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) in the process. The Toreros scored on a Pepperdine error and then Riley Adams hit a three-run homer to left field.
Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) entered in relief for the Waves, giving up one run in the fourth during his 2.2 innings of work. Wilson struck out four. Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) tossed the next four innings, setting down 10 Toreros in a row at one point before giving up a pair of hits. Gamboa held San Diego scoreless for the duration of his relief outing, striking out one without giving up a walk.
The Waves got two runners on in the seventh, but a strikeout and a deep flyout to center ended the inning. Pepperdine finally got on the board in the ninth when Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) hit his first homer of the year to right field. Barnett's solo-shot would later be followed by an RBI single from Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS), but the Waves left runners on first and second to end the game.
Gary Cornish got the win for the visitors, moving to 3-1 after throwing 8.0 innings, giving up seven hits and two runs. Lucas took the loss to fall to 2-3.
Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) and Barnett each had two-hit days for the Waves, while Bryson Brigman and Kirby posted three hits each.
Pepperdine will be back in action on Tuesday, when they face No. 22 UC Santa Barbara in Malibu. That game will be at 3 p.m. and can be seen live on TheW.tv.
