San Diego Evens Series With 6-4 Win

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to San Diego on Friday afternoon, evening the series at 1-1 after an 8-0 win for the Waves yesterday.

The Waves fall to 10-11 overall and 2-3 in West Coast Conference play. San Diego moves to 14-11, 2-3 WCC. The two teams will play the rubber game tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Malibu.

Pepperdine held an early lead after Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) and Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) hit solo-homers in the bottom of the second, putting the Waves in front 2-1. Pepperdine added a run in the third inning thanks to an Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) single up the middle.

San Diego answered with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth and then scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead. Ryan Kirby singled in two runs for the visitor and Hunter Mercado-Hood singled in one.

Both teams scored in the eighth inning, but the Waves couldn't come all the way back. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) singled to lead off the eighth and Jefferson doubled him home. Pepperdine had runners on second and third with one out, but the Toreros got two strikeouts to end the inning.

Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) took the loss for the Waves, falling to 3-2 on the year. Troy Conyers picked up the win for San Diego, throwing 6.0 innings to move to 4-2. Nathan Kuchta got his third save of the year, picking up the last six outs for the Toreros.

Jefferson was 3-for-4 on the day for Pepperdine, driving in two runs and falling a triple short of the cycle. His solo-home run was his team-leading fifth of the season. Anderson posted two hits on the day.

Mercado-Hood led San Diego with three hits and scored a game-high three runs. Bhret Bewley went 2-for-4. The Toreros had 11 hits in the game and Pepperdine posted 10.
