
No. 1 Pepperdine Sweeps Day Two of COC Beach Invitational

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - The top-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball squad posted another outing at the College of Charleston Beach Invitational this Saturday morning, sweeping both Mercer and Alabama-Birmingham 5-0 to keep a perfect 8-0 overall dual record.
To start the early day with a five-match sweep over Mercer, the Waves earned four straight-set wins and one three-set win to clinch. Then, the winning ways continued as Pepperdine swept the team's second match over Alabama-Birmingham.
Senior Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and freshman Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) opened the day with straight-set victory over Tori Penrod and Emily Krogman of Mercer. After battling out a close 23-21 first set, the Waves finished out the win with a 21-15 second set victory on court one.
The duo then advanced their record to 7-1 on the season with a solid 21-16, 21-9 win over UAB's Sara Rishell and Chelsi Carter to end the day.
On court two, junior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and freshman Kaity Bailey (Ojai, Calif./Villanova Preparatory School) performed highly in the first match of the day, dominating the first set towards a 21-11 victory over Mercer's Emily Peel and Sophie Peel. The Waves then battled it out in the second set, finishing with a 23-21 result.
The duo then continued the morning with a 21-14, 21-10 win over UAB's Amber Treace and Zahria Richard. On the season, Knudsen and Bailey have gone 6-2 in dual play for the Waves in the number two position.
Sophomore Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) and freshman Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went to three sets in their first match of the day against the Bear's Gretja Otten and Jessica Johnson, winning 21-12, 21-23 and 15-16 on court three.
The pair then advanced their overall dual record to 7-1 with a 21-18, 21-15 victory over Avei Logoleo and Tress Buckland of Alabama-Birmingham.
On courts four and five, two Waves' pairs remained undefeated in the 2016 spring campaign with two strong straight-set wins throughout the day.
First on court four, freshmen pair Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) and Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) opened the day with a crushing 21-8, 21-17 victory over MU's Morgan MacGilvary and Madison Kerr. The team then bested UAB's Michaela Reesor and Avery Hoven with a 21-16 and 21-17 decision to advance their record to a perfect 8-0 this season.
Also remaining undefeated at 8-0 this season, are Waves' duo senior Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Sarah Seiber (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona) finished out the match with Mercer with a commanding 21-11, 21-14 win over Danielle Faust and Claire Waliczek on court five. The pair then went on to take down Gabby Moreno and Emily Martinez of UAB by a wide margin, with 21-6 and 21-12 set scores.
In exhibition play on court six, junior Leanna Schroeder (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) and freshman Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) also defeated their Mercer opponents, dropping Ellie James and Demi-Shay Watchorn 21-15 and 25-18 to open the day. To finish out the day, the duo advanced their record to 4-0 with a pair of 21-17 sets over Alabama-Birmingham's Victoria Young and Rachel Evans.
