MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 18 Pepperdine women's tennis team secured a solid 7-0 victory over San Diego State this Sunday afternoon at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves first took the doubles point, before dominating the singles competition en route to the uncontested victory.
The Waves (3-1) knew it would be an exciting match with San Diego State (2-3) early on. New duo Matea Cutura and Luisa Stefani defeated Taylor Lederman and Isabell Hoorn to start doubles play with a 6-3 win. Another green Waves' pair, Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai and Dzina Milovanovic then fell 6-3 to Jana Buth and Tami Nguyen to even up the doubles competition.
In exciting fashion, Anna Wierda and Danielle Feneridis took their doubles play to a 6-6 tie, forcing a tie-breaker. The Waves prevailed with a 7-4 tie-break mark for the 7-6 win to secure the doubles point for Pepperdine before heading into singles play.
Pepperdine came out strong in singles competition, dominating the Aztecs first as No. 96-ranked Milovanovic fought for a 6-0, 6-3 win over Paola Diaz de Regules. Cutura then brought the Waves up 3-0 with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 sweep over Jana Buth to give the Waves sizeable cushion. The Waves clinched the win on a big 6-0, 6-1 effort delivered by No. 102-ranked Laura Gulbe.
As previously agreed upon by the coaches, the final three matches were played to completion. Runglerdkriangkrai defeated Taylor Lederman 6-2, 6-4, No. 14-ranked Stefani put down No. 50-ranked Tami Nguyen, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) and Michaela Capannolo was good for a 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 victory to end the day.
