MALIBU, Calif. - The 52-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis squad faced off with the No. 48-ranked Washington Huskies this Sunday afternoon, falling 4-1 at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Washington (9-2) started the day with the advantage after taking the doubles point on two wins to one over the Waves (3-4, 1-0 WCC). Despite a strong effort on the singles side, the Huskies worked quickly to put the match away 4-1.
On the doubles side, Pepperdine went down 1-0 with a 6-2 decision in the Huskies favor on court three, but the Waves were quick to rally back.
Sophomore pair Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) picked up the first Waves' win of the afternoon by dropping Jake Douglas and Mitch Stewart with a 6-2 result.
No. 17-ranked duo Junior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and freshman Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) then challenged Washington's top pair, Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe, on court one. The teams went point-for-point to the 6-6 mark to bring the match into a tie-breaker decision. Although Pepperdine had a 6-4 edge late in the break, the Huskies battled back to garner an 8-6 win to clinch the doubles point.
Trailing by one on the day, the Waves headed into singles play looking to take over the lead. The Huskies struck first again, however, as Foley bested junior Tom Hill (Birgmingham, England/K12 International Academy) 6-2, 6-4 to bring the home team up 2-0 over the Waves.
Pane then picked up the first point of the day for Pepperdine with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gal Hakak. With multiple matches about to finish, Washington gained the advantage and finished off a 4-1 win over the Waves with Enzo Sommer's 7-6, 6-4 win over freshman Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS) and Jake Douglas' 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over junior Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./Fusion Academy) to end the day.
