Wedel Takes First-Round Lead at Prestige at PGA West

LA QUINTA, Calif. " Frederick Wedel's first round of the spring season was a great one as the Pepperdine men's golf senior has the first-round lead at The Prestige at PGA West after a 5-under 66 on Monday.
Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) leads Stanford's Brandon Wu by one shot. Wedel had a total of eight birdies on the day, including three in his final four holes. It was Wedel's 35th career below-par round, moving him into a tie for fifth place on the Waves' all-time list.
The Waves are in sixth place as a team after an opening-round 290 at the par-71 Greg Norman Course at PGA West. All five teams ahead of Pepperdine are ranked in the nation's top 30. The second round is Tuesday and the third and final round is on Wednesday.
Also in the lineup, sophomore Anthony Cecere (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal School) is tied for 32nd place at 74, freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) are both tied for 42nd after 75s and freshman Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) is tied for 66th at 78.
Cecere had an eagle on the par-5 12th hole. Cootes had two birdies on the day.
Also, freshman Lorenzo Magagnin (Treviso, Italy), playing as an individual, is in 82nd place after a 78.
