FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. " The Pepperdine women's track team closed out competition at the two-day Northern Arizona Invitational on Saturday. It was the Waves' second-ever indoor event.

"Overall, it was a good trip," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "It was a good meet for us and we've done some good work in our first indoor season."

Law student Mariah Gondeiro (Raynesford, Mont./Belt HS/Rocky Mountain College) bettered the school record that was established in the 3,000 meters three weeks ago. She finished first out of the two Division I runners in the competition in 11:00.50, and was third out of nine overall.

Senior Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) took seventh place out of 20 Division I runners in the mile, bettering the school record with a time of 5:31.28.

Junior Izzy Connell (Campbell, Calif./The Harker School) had the fifth-best time in the 60-meter preliminaries in 7.86 seconds, but sat out the finals.

Sophomore Madison Hays (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS) improved her own record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.31. Other top competitors for the Waves were sophomore Madison Blume (Glendora, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory HS) in the 400 and junior Meri-Claire Montgomery (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge HS) in the 800.

The 4x400 team of junior Jordan Spencer (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie HS), Connell, Blume and sophomore Claudia Rodriguez (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet HS) was 11 seconds better than the team's effort three weeks ago.

The Waves begin their outdoor season next week (Saturday, Feb. 20) with the annual tri-meet at Westmont that also includes UC Santa Barbara.
