Feb. 12, 2016 FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. " Jordan Spencer and Katie Engel posted victories as the Pepperdine women's track team began its second-ever indoor meet at the Northern Arizona Invitational on Friday night.
The Waves only competed in two events on Friday and the bulk of the meet will take place on Saturday at NAU's Walkup Skydome.
Spencer (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie HS), a junior, recorded the top Division I time in the 600 meters at 1:38.65. She finished with the third-best time in the event overall.
Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS), a senior, won the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 19:34.27.
"It was a great start here in Flagstaff and I'm excited to see two winners," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "Jordan ran in the fast heat and won the Division I competition with a pretty good time for her. She's established a good school record for people to shoot for in the future. It's going to lead to good things for her in the 800 meters this spring.
"Katie lapped two of the runners in her race. She started out conservatively because we talked about the altitude here. The longer the race the tougher it is. Shortly after the mile Katie took over and after two miles she left them in the dust."
The Waves had a total of 10 runners entered in the 600 meters. Among Division I runners, sophomore Claudia Rodriguez (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet HS) came in fourth and senior Stasia Demick (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) was fifth.
A total of 17 Pepperdine runners are at the meet, which continues Saturday at 10 a.m. MT.
