Malibu, Calif. - Sydney Bordonaro became the fourth player in program history to hit at least seven threes in a game, but it wasn't enough to overcome a high-powered Duke offense, as the Pepperdine Women's Basketball team fell 99-65 to the Blue Devils.
Bordonaro went 7-for-10 from beyond the arc, finishing with a career-high 23 points. Duke hit 12 threes in the game and shot 49.3 percent to move to 7-1 on the year. Pepperdine falls to 0-5.
Duke jumped out to an 11-0 lead thanks to three early 3-pointers. The Blue Devils made four long balls and shot 57.1 percent overall en route to a 29-15 first quarter lead. The Waves went 3-for-7 from long range in the first quarter to stay within striking distance. Bordonaro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Burrell HS) hit both of the threes she took in the first quarter and finished the first half 3-for-3 from downtown.
A 16-7 run to start the second quarter pushed it to a 23-point Blue Devil lead. Duke would lead 56-32 at the half. Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) scored 11 points in the second quarter to lead Pepperdine with 14 in the first half.
The Waves cut the deficit below 20 points several times to start the third quarter, but the hot shooting kept the Blue Devils out in front by a comfortable margin.
For the game, Bordonaro added four assists and three rebounds to her 23 points. She is the first Wave since Jessica Ross in 2006 to make at least seven threes in a game. Ross set the Pepperdine record in 2006 with eight. Damaris Hinojosa in 2001 and Dana Sulenski in 1999 each had seven threes in a game as well. As a team Pepperdine hit 11-of-20 three-pointers.
Green finished with 17 points for the Waves and Megan House (Oceanside, Calif./J Serra Catholic HS) had 12 rebounds to lead all players.
On the other side, Rebecca Greenwell hit eight threes for Duke and finished with a game-high 31 points. Lexie Brown had 17 points and 12 assists for the Blue Devils.
Duke also used a 42-10 points in the paint advantage to seal the victory and scored 34 points off turnovers. Pepperdine had a 25-12 fastbreak point advantage.
The Waves will be back in action on Tuesday when they hit the road against Utah Valley. That game can be heard live on WaveCasts at 6 p.m. (PT).
