OREM, Utah - Allie Green became the 22nd player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark, but the Pepperdine women's basketball team dropped a back-and-forth game on the road to Utah Valley, 72-65, on Tuesday night.
The Waves led by as much as six in the fourth quarter, but Mariah Seals led the Wolverines back as the Pepperdine offense went cold down the stretch. The Waves fall to 0-6 on the year, while Utah Valley moves to 1-6.
Pepperdine held a 57-51 lead early in the fourth quarter and led as late as 6:28 to play. Seals scored the next eight points for the home team to put the Wolverines up 63-60 with 5:24 left in the game. The Waves hit two free throws and a three the rest of the way, getting the long ball from Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS). All nine of Utah Valley's final points were scored at the free throw line.
The teams traded the lead back and forth four times in the third quarter, before Pepperdine took a 52-51 lead into the final quarter, Seals hit a three just before the buzzer to make it a one point game heading to the fourth.
Utah Valley got out to a quick 8-0 lead, but a 13-3 run by the Waves, thanks in large part to back-to-back Sydney Bordonaro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Burrell HS) threes, put the Waves on top 13-11 with 3:46 left in the quarter. The Wolverines came back to take a two-point lead into the second quarter and would extend it to a 31-24 advantage midway through the period. Pepperdine came back with an 8-0 run to grab a brief lead. The teams traded baskets going into the half, with a Leya Harvey layup giving the home team a 35-34 lead at the break.
Bordonaro led all scorers with 16 points at the half, hitting 3-of-4 threes and 5-of-7 field goals. Pepperdine outrebounded the Wolverines 22-17 in the first half and had a 9-4 offensive rebounding edge. Utah Valley shot 45.2 percent from the floor in the first two quarters, to 33.3 percent for the Waves.
For the game, Bordonaro finished with 21 points and Green had nine. Green's 1,000th point came on the three-pointer in the first quarter. Pepperdine maintained a 43037 rebounding edge.
Seals led Utah Valley with 23 points. The Wolverines finished the game shooting 45 percent, while Pepperdine shot 29 percent.
The Waves will be back in action on Saturday when they play the second game of their three-game road trip at Cal Poly. Game time is at 4 p.m. with a live audio broadcast available on WaveCasts.
