
Cootes Leads Waves at MacKenzie Invitational

FAIRFAX, California " The Pepperdine men's golf team couldn't get enough birdies to hold onto the lead at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Tuesday, but sophomore Roy Cootes moved up to a tie for sixth place and the Waves finished in fifth place as a team.
Pepperdine and Saint Mary's began the third round tied for first place. Neither could hold off Arizona State, which shot 11-under on Tuesday for a winning total of a 31-under 821.
The Waves were 24-under after the first two rounds but shot 1-over on Tuesday to finish with a 23-under 829 (274-270-285) at the par-71 Meadow Club. The 23-under ties the sixth-best team score in program history.
Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) picked up his first top-10 finish of the season thanks to three straight rounds below 70. He finished with a 10-under 203 (69-66-68), which matched his career-best score set at this same tournament last season. Cootes' final round included three birdies and no miscues. He had a total of 40 pars over the three rounds, one off the tournament high.
Sophomore Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and freshman Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) both turned in top-20 finishes. Theegala tied for 12th with an 8-under 205 (64-67-74) and McCarthy tied for 18th with a 5-under 208 (70-67-71). McCarthy, who posted the first top-20 finish of his young college career, had four birdies during Tuesday's even-par round. Theegala led the Waves with 17 birdies over the two days.
Freshman Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) tied for 56th place at 217 (72-70-75) and senior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) tied for 61st at 218 (71-75-72).
The Waves continue their fall season at Baylor's Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas, from Oct. 24-25.
