FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. " The Pepperdine women's track team's first-ever indoor meet was a success as the Waves ran at the season-opening Northern Arizona Friday Night Duals.

"We had 15 Pepperdine women compete in their first-ever indoor meet and that was pretty exciting," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "It's kind of neat that our top performer automatically becomes the school record holder."

Junior sprinter Izzy Connell (Campbell, Calif./The Harker School) had strong showings in the 200 meters, where she placed fifth with a time of 25.36, and the 60 meters, where she took seventh with a time of 7.82.

"Izzy was our outstanding performer of the meet," Radnoti said. "I'm excited for where she is after just about 10 days of training. She's going to be a very strong performer for us and is a welcome re-addition after spending a year abroad."

Connell was the Waves' top sprinter during her 2014 freshman season.

Senior Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) took second place in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:19.38.

"Katie ran tough and we're going to see her doing some great things this season," Radnoti said.

Law school student Mariah Gondeiro (Raynesford, Mont./Belt HS/Rocky Mountain College) took sixth place in the mile (5:34.71), senior Rachel Rant (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) was seventh in the 800 meters (2:25.45) and junior Jordan Spencer (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie HS) was eighth in the 400 meters (59.90). Pepperdine's top runner in the 60-meter hurdles was sophomore Madison Hays (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS). The Waves also competed in the 4x400-meter relay.

The Waves competed against teams from Cal State Fullerton, CSU Bakersfield, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona and UNLV.

Pepperdine next returns to Flagstaff for the NAU Invitational on February 12-13.
