MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. " Only a little bit more golf was played on Tuesday at the Primland Collegiate Invitational, and the Pepperdine men's golf team ended up with a fifth-place finish at the rain-shortened event.
Seven of the nine schools were unable to finish 36 holes of play on Monday after dealing with delays. They all completed their second round on Tuesday morning, but the event was called at that point.
The Waves shot an even-par 576 (290-286) for the two rounds at the par-72 Highland Course at Primland.
"It was a good experience for the guys," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "Where we ended up wasn't exactly what we were shooting for, but the guys learned a lot about themselves in the wet conditions and dealing with the delays. So all in all it was a good experience."
Junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) had an impressive showing, as he tied for fourth place with a 5-under 139 (69-70). He had a team-high nine birdies over the two rounds, including five during his 3-under first round.
Freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) tied for 12th place with an even-par 144 (75-69), junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) tied for 19th at 145 (71-74), senior Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) tied for 29th at 149 (76-73) and sophomore Anthony Cecere tied for 32nd at 150 (75-75).
Theegala, who was making his college debut, led the team with 26 total pars, and he had four birdies and just one bogey in his 3-under second round.
"It was nice to see Robbie have such a solid tournament," Beard said. "He played hard from start to finish and he's a great competitor. It was also good to see Sahith shoot in the 60s in just his second collegiate round."
Pepperdine returns to action at California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational on October 12-13.
