LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 19 Pepperdine women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat at UCLA on Thursday night, falling on a penalty kick in the 90th minute.
The Waves played even with the Bruins for the first 89:06 before the home team was awarded a penalty in the final minute of play. The loss drops the Waves to 5-3-1 on the year, while UCLA improves to 4-4.
"I was really proud of our team's performance," said head coach Tim Ward. "We had a few really good chances to have a go, but we didn't take them. Then, to their credit, they came back and had some chances of their own. It was really a game of momentum shifts in the second half, the penalty call just killed us in the end."
The Waves had several dangerous opportunities in the opening half, the first of which came in the 12th minute when a ball came loose in the UCLA box and Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) pounced on it. Her shot was blocked as it came off her foot and went wide, however. Rodriguez would later fire a shot from just outside the box that deflected off a UCLA defender's head.
The Bruins tallied five shots to the Waves' two in the first half. UCLA sent several long shots towards the Pepperdine goal, with Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) blocking the only attempt on target.
The Waves came out of the break strong, manufacturing a pair of chances on crosses by Meghan Schoen (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood HS) in the first 10 minutes, but Pepperdine couldn't get on the end of either for the score.
Seabert came up with her biggest save of the game in the second half when UCLA was awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute. The Waves' keeper made a diving stop to her left to keep the teams even.
Pepperdine caught a break later in the half when Kodi Lavrusky's shot went off the post for the Bruins. The Waves ran out of breaks when Kristiana Konkol-Mroczkowski went down in the box in the 90th minute, drawing a whistle for the decisive penalty kick. Annie Alvarado took the shot and scored for the Bruins.
Pepperdine now has a 10-day break before returning to action on Sept. 27 against Cal Poly. The Waves then open WCC play against Pacific on Oct. 2. Both games are at home.
