MALIBU, Calif. " Former American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Robert Geibel has transferred from Louisville to Pepperdine, men's golf coach Michael Beard announced today.
"We are looking forward to having Robbie join our program," said Beard, who led the Waves to the 2015 West Coast Conference title. "I believe he is a great fit in many ways. Robbie is very passionate about golf and wants to compete at a high level. I know he is excited about making a positive impact on our program."
Geibel was the 2014 AAC Freshman of the Year after averaging 72.57 strokes per round and placing fourth at the AAC Championship. He was named to the All-Midwest Regional Team after tying for 13th place at the NCAA Auburn Regional. In November 2013, he won the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational with a 15-under 201 (67-67-67).
As a sophomore in 2014-15, Geibel averaged 74.97 strokes and he had three top-10 finishes among his 10 tournaments.
"Pepperdine offers great weather all year, and that's a key aspect when playing this sport," said Geibel, who will be a junior in 2015-16. "I loved the area and the campus a whole. I feel like I will enjoy it every day when I wake up. The fact that we have access to different golf courses on a weekly basis is an asset so we can play different styles and further our game in every way. Also, the coaching staff and resources are suited to exactly what I need and I am confident that they will help me grow and develop, from my golf game to who I am as a person."
Geibel hails from Pembroke Pines, Fla., and attended American Heritage High School. He was the nation's 53rd-rated player as a junior.
Geibel will be one of four newcomers for the Waves in 2015-16, joining incoming freshmen Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS), Lorenzo Magagnin (Treviso, Italy) and Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS).
