SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team fell on the road to San Diego on Saturday, dropping the series opener to the Toreros 12-1. The teams opened the series on Saturday night after getting rained out on Friday.
David Hill tossed a two-hit, complete-game for San Diego in the opening game win. The Waves fall to 24-23 overall, 14-8 WCC with the loss and the Toreros move to 29-19, 18-8 WCC. The teams finish their series up tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. in San Diego.
Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) had the only two hits for the Waves, who managed four baserunners in the game. Kyle Holder went 3-for-6 with five RBI for USD.
A six-run second inning put the home team on top early and the Waves were never able to mount the rally they needed against Hill, who struck out 10 batters and walked just one. Five hits and one Wave error led to the six runs by the Toreros.
Pepperdine managed a run in the top of the fifth inning after a leadoff walk by Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS). A groundout later in the inning brought Barnett home. Caruso singled in the inning to move Barnett to third and then added a single in the seventh for the Waves only two hits.
USD added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and then posted four runs in the bottom of the eighth to go up 12-1.
Six different Torero players posted multi-hit games on the day.
Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) took the loss for the Waves, falling to 6-3 on the year. Pepperdine used three pitchers in the game.
After the two games on Sunday, the Waves have one regular-season series left, hosting Gonzaga next weekend.
