SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Pepperdine women's golf team's hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships took a hit on Friday as the Waves dropped to 13th place after the second round of the NCAA South Bend Regional.
With only one round remaining, 22nd-ranked and sixth-seeded Pepperdine has a big hill to climb. Only the top six teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, and with a two-day total of 607 (299-308), the Waves are 14 shots back of the cut line.
Play concludes at the par-72 Warren Golf Course with Saturday's third and final round. The Waves will be starting on the 10th hole at 8:54 a.m. ET along with North Carolina and Eastern Kentucky.
It was a rough day all around, as the Waves' scores ranged from 75 to 83.
Freshman Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) had the team's best score of the day, a 3-over 75. She now leads the team in the standings at a tie for 37th place at 151 (76-75).
Senior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) is tied for 44th at 152 (74-78), junior Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) is tied for 66th at 155 (72-83), freshman Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) is tied for 70th at 156 (77-79) and senior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 86th at 159 (83-76).
Lee recorded a team-high three birdies on Friday, while Chow and Wijaya each had two.
Pepperdine is attempting to qualify for the NCAA Championships (May 22-27 at The Concessions Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.) for the 12th time in school history. The Waves are making their 17th consecutive regional appearance.
