SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Marissa Chow shot an even-par 72 to lead the Pepperdine women's golf team during the first round of the NCAA South Bend Regional on Thursday, but the Waves have opened the tournament three shots back of where they need to be.

Only the top six teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, and the 22nd-ranked and sixth-seeded Waves are currently tied for ninth place after an 11-over 299. Kent State and Oklahoma State are tied for the last two spots above the cut line at 296.

Play continues at the par-72 Warren Golf Course with Friday's second round. The Waves will be paired with Kentucky and Notre Dame and will start off the 10th hole at 8 a.m. ET. The third and final round is on Saturday.

The Waves were in good shape after the front nine as their four scoring players were at just 3-over at the turn. But a few more bogeys were recorded on the back nine as those four had a combined 8-over.

Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS), a junior who is the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, had four birdies during her round. She was 2-over after 13 holes but birdies on 14 and 18 got her back to par.

Senior Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) is tied for 25th place after a 2-over 74. She had three birdies during her round.

Freshman Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.) is tied for 39th at 76, freshman Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) is tied for 49th at 77 and senior Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) is tied for 92nd at 83.

Pepperdine is attempting to qualify for the NCAA Championships (May 22-27 at The Concessions Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.) for the 12th time in school history. The Waves are making their 17th consecutive regional appearance.
