SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team split its doubleheader at San Diego on Sunday afternoon, taking the opener 4-2 before falling 10-6 in the late game.

The split locks up a regular-season WCC title for USD as they lead the second-place Waves by 2.5 games. Pepperdine has three more WCC contests next weekend, while the Toreros conference season is finished.

The Waves are now 25-24 overall, 15-9 WCC and are still in good position for a spot in the WCC Tournament with three games against sixth-place Gonzaga coming up. The Waves control their own destiny, needing two wins to secure a seat no matter what anyone else does. A number of other scenarios could clinch a postseason berth for the Waves, with six teams still vying for the last three spots in the WCC tournament heading into the final regular-season weekend.

Pepperdine picked up the win in the opener behind a stellar relief appearance from Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS), who entered the game in the second inning and proceeded to give up one earned run in 6.1 innings pitched. Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) recorded the last five outs on the day to pick up the save and keep the Waves alive for the conference crown.

It wasn't to be, however, as USD posted back-to-back three-run innings in the seventh and eighth to take control of the late game. The Waves got a two-run homer from Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) in the ninth, but couldn't come all the way back from a 10-4 deficit.

Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) drove in two runs in the early game and then knocked in a third in the late game to give him three RBI on the day. Anderson drove in a trio of runs in the second game of the day. Nick Costello (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) Moyer and Anderson all had four hits in the two games. Anderson was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the opener and led the team with four RBI.

Blanchard moved to 2-2 with the win in the early game, scattering five hits and giving up just two runs. Gamboa recorded his fifth save of the year, striking out one and giving up one hit in his five outs of work.

Anthony McIver got the win for the Toreros in the late game, tossing the final 2.2 innings. Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) took the loss for the Waves, falling to 7-3 on the year.

The Waves came back to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning after going behind 4-0 in the first frame. Six runs over the next two innings for USD put the game out of reach, though.

Pepperdine will take on Cal State Northridge at home on Tuesday in its final non-conference game of the year. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
