SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team got a leadoff homer, but couldn't find any offense beyond that as the Waves fell 9-1 at Cal Poly on Wednesday evening.
In a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but moved back a day due to rain, Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) led-off with a homer, but it was one of just four hits and the only run for Pepperdine. The Waves fall to 17-17 with the loss.
The two teams split the season-series after Pepperdine picked up a 9-8 walk-off win a week ago in Malibu.
Cal Poly answered the leadoff homer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first and then broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. The Mustangs sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth and had four hits to take a 7-1 lead.
The home team had already gone ahead with two runs in the second inning and then added to the advantage with runs in the sixth and seventh. Cal Poly managed nine hits in the game.
Jarred Zill picked up his first collegiate win for Cal Poly, tossing 5.1 innings and giving up two hits and one run. Max Green (Rolling Hills Estate, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) got the loss in his first collegiate appearance.
Mark Mathias and Ryan Drobney drove in multiple runs for the Mustangs, and Zack Zehner had a three-hit day. Cal Poly moves to 11-18 with the win.
Fornaci finished the day 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, and Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) and Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) each had one-hit, one-walk days. It was Fornaci's fifth homer of the year and third to lead off a game. Pepperdine used seven pitchers in the game.
The Waves will be back in action this Friday when they open a three-game series at home against Santa Clara.
