SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision on the road Tuesday afternoon to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara.
The Waves scored in the ninth and had runners in scoring position, but couldn't mount a comeback as a double play ended it for the Gauchos. UCSB posted 14 hits in the contest as the Waves used seven pitchers.
The Gauchos went up 5-0 before Pepperdine got on the board in the fifth inning. Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to give the Waves their first run and then Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. That would be it for the Pepperdine offense until the ninth.
UCSB responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, getting back-to-back homers from Paddy O'Brien and Austin Bush.
Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) drove in Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) in the ninth and the Waves put two runners on with no outs, but a strikeout and double play ended the Waves chances of a comeback.
Jefferson's long ball was his fifth of the season and he was 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) and Caruso each had two-hit days as well. The Waves had seven hits in the game.
Cameron Newell went 3-for-5 for the Gauchos and five players posted multi-hit days. UCSB moves to 29-9 with the win.
The Waves fall to 22-20 with the loss. Pepperdine has a 10 day break before it plays again. The Waves have seven road games coming up, starting with three games at first-place San Francisco on May 2-3.
