MORAGA, Calif. -- The #18-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback at #45 Saint Mary's in the final dual match of the regular season. Despite the loss, the Waves still enter next week's West Coast Conference Tournament as the top seed.

The Gaels (13-8, 7-2 WCC) got on the board first, earning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.

Pepperdine (14-6, 8-1 WCC) battled to get back on track in singles, winning first sets on three of the six courts.

Saint Mary's, hungry to win on its own Senior Day, chalked two more points courtesy of straight-set wins by Jamie Pawid and Emma Critser.

Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) battled back after losing her first frame to Kareena Manji, taking set two, 6-4. Manji made a comeback of her own, however, and took the third set to put the Gaels out of reach at 4-0.

Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) won her first set in the tiebreaker, but eventually succumbed to a 10-6 loss in the third set tiebreaker. Laura Gulbe (Riga, Latvia/Murjāņu Sporta Ģimnāzija) also won her first frame, but would go on to lose in three.

Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) scored the Waves' lone point, defeating Danielle Flores 7-6, 7-5 in the battle of the team's two aces.

Pepperdine looks to get back on track next week with the WCC Tournament. Returning to the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, the top-seeded Waves will open action on Thursday, April 23 in the quarterfinals.
