SEATTLE, Wash. - The Pepperdine baseball team struggled offensively on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-0 at Washington in the second game of a three-game series.
Pepperdine was held hitless through seven innings and couldn't find the late rally it needed to make a comeback on the road.
Washington struck first in the fifth, scoring two runs on a pair of RBI-singles. The Huskies had just two hits off of Waves' starter A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) up to that point.
The home team added three more runs in the sixth, getting a two-run double from Matt Jackson and a run-scoring single from Jack Meggs.
Washington starter Noah Bremer took a no-hitter into the eighth until Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) broke it up with a pinch-hit single to lead off the frame. That was all the Waves would manage against the Husky pitching, though, as Rodriguez was stranded on first by Washington reliever Brandon Coate. Troy Rallings finished off the ninth inning to seal the win for Washington.
Puckett made it through six innings for the Waves, but gave up all five runs to suffer the loss in the decision, falling to 2-2 on the year. Three Wave relievers held Washington hitless through the final two frames. Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) had one strikeout in his lone inning of work. Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) and Jayson Balades (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) finished off the eighth.
Jackson had a two-hit day and three RBI for Washington and Levi Jordan was 2-for-2 at the plate.
The loss drops Pepperdine to 7-8 on the year and Washington moves to 11-4. The teams will finish off their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
