SEATTLE, Wash. - The Pepperdine baseball team fell on the road Friday night, dropping a 3-1 decision at Washington.
The Waves recorded seven hits, but left seven runners on base, giving up two runs in the third and one in the eighth to drop the opening game of a three-game series.
Pepperdine went up 1-0 in the top of the third on a Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) two-out single up the middle. Anderson's run scoring hit was preceded by two-out hits from Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) and Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) to keep the inning alive.
The Huskies came right back in the bottom half of the third, capitalizing on a pair of free bases to score a pair of runs. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch, the home team got an RBI-single and a run-scoring groundout to plate the go ahead runs.
Pepperdine starter Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) settled back in, holding the Huskies scoreless until the eighth when Joey Morgan hit a solo-shot to put Washington up 3-1. McClelland worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, inducing an inning-ending popup to end the threat.
McClelland tossed 8.0 innings on the day, giving up eight hits, but stranding 10 Washington runners. The Waves' righty has tossed a full eight innings in his last two starts and has gone at least 6.0 innings in all four of his starts this year. The loss was his first of the season as he falls to 2-1.
The Waves got a runner in scoring position in the fourth, but wouldn't threaten again until the ninth. Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) singled with one out in the top of the ninth and then moved in to scoring position on a wild pitch. A strikeout and fly out to left stranded Jefferson on second and ended the game, however.
Fornaci finished the game 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot for Pepperdine, drawing a walk and scoring a run. Chris Baker and Morgan each had two-hit days for the Huskies.
Tyler Davis tossed 8.1 innings to pick up the win for Washington and Spencer Jones got the final two outs to get the save.
Pepperdine falls to 7-7 with the loss and the Huskies move to 10-4. The two teams will be back at it tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the second game of the series.
