PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Pepperdine baseball team picked up a 3-1, 11th inning victory over Portland on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep on the road.
The Waves got an RBI single from Matt Crowder and a bases-loaded walk in the 11th to score a pair of runs and get the win. The victory moves Pepperdine to 14-15 overall and 5-4 WCC.
A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) tossed 8.0 innings in the start, but got a no-decision as the two teams remained tied at 1-1 into extra innings. Puckett struck out seven batters and allowed five hits, giving up just one earned run in the start.
Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) came in in relief and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, holding the Pilots hitless to pick up the win and move to 3-1. Gamboa struck out one and gave up no walks, facing the minimum in his three innings of work.
Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) led off the 11th with a single and after two walks was pushed to third with one out. Crowder (Atherton, Calif./BYU) then came in to pinch hit and drove a single into left field to score what would be the game-winning run. Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) then drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Waves up by two.
Gamboa retired the side in order to end the game and seal the win. It was the Waves' second series sweep this season.
Davis Tominaga tossed 10.0 innings for the Pilots, giving up seven hits and one run in a no-decision. Jordan Wilcox took the loss for Portland. The pilots fall to 5-24, 1-8 WCC.
Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) doubled in a run in the fifth to put Pepperdine up 1-0, before the home team tied it with a solo-homer in the seventh.
The Waves return to Malibu this week, hosting Cal Poly on Tuesday before hitting the road again against Pacific. First pitch on Tuesday will be at 3 p.m.
