PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Pepperdine baseball team defeated Portland, 9-5 at Joe Etzel Field today in West Coast Conference action. The Waves scattered 16 hits, led by Hutton Moyer's three hit, three RBI outing.
Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) picked up the win for Pepperdine (13-15, 4-4 WCC), allowing just five hits in 7.2 innings of work. The freshman struck out seven, while only walking three. Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) shut down the Pilots, giving up just two hits and no runs for the save.
Portland took an early 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Pepperdine answered back in the sixth when sophomore Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) reached first on an error, earning an RBI and the first run for the Waves. Sophomore Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) later doubled down the right field line for his second of a game-high four hits, sending around Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS), ending the inning with a score of 3-2.
In the seventh inning, junior Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) knocked through a single that brought in Moyer. Freshman Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) singled to right field, and Anderson scored to put the Waves out in front, 5-2.
Portland rallied back in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homerun by Cooper Hummel to tighten the score to 5-4, but Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) broke the game open in the next frame. With the bases loaded, Moyer tripled to right center and extended the Waves' lead, 8-4. Pepperdine scored once more after Anderson doubled to chart his second RBI of the afternoon.
The Pilots put one more in the books but Blanchard shut the home team down in the final inning.
The Waves close the series against the Pilots (5-12, 1-7 WCC) on Sunday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
