Pepperdine Defeats Long Beach State, 3-1

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The #3 Pepperdine men's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over #10 Long Beach State on Thursday evening inside The Pyramid. Parker Kalmbach charted his third consecutive double-double for the Waves with 18 kills and 14 digs.



Final set scores 25-22, 28-26, 17-25, 25-20.



The win moves Pepperdine to 18-4 overall and 13-4 in the MPSF. Pepperdine is still in third place in the league standings, but just 1.5 matches behind first-place Hawaii (at UC San Diego this weekend). UC Irvine stands in second place at 12-3, entering itstwo-match series at BYU starting Friday.



Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) earned his fifth double-double of the season with his match-best 18 kills and 14 digs. The MPSF leader in kills now boasts a season average of 4.14 per set.



Brennan Anderson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar HS/Ohio State) led the match with 15 digs, while also distributing four assists.



Reigning MPSF and AVCA National Player of the Week Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) tossed out 49 assists, and led the match with three aces - all in the fourth set.



Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) and Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) both scored in double figures with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Matt Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif./Bishop Alemany) tallied 11.5 points behind nine kills, three blocks and an ace.



Overall, Pepperdine out killed the 49ers 59-44 while hitting .271 (59 kills-23 errors-133 attempts). Long Beach State (12-11, 8-10 MPSF) swung at a .237 (44-16-118) clip.



Starting middle blocker Mitchell Penning (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) finished his night with four kills and no errors to go along with three blocks and an ace.



Pepperdine plays its final regular-season road match on Saturday, March 28 at Cal State Northridge. First serve inside the Matadome is set for 7 p.m.
