SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team opened its Pacific Northwest road swing with a 4-3 win over Gonzaga. The Waves clinched the dual at 4-1 before the home side won the final two points.

The Waves move to 9-6 overall following their seventh 4-3 win of the year, including a 2-0 mark vs. West Coast Conference opponents. The Zags fall to 8-4 overall after dropping their league opener.

Pepperdine struck first, winning the doubles point. Luca Marquard (Bensheim, Germany/Goeth Gymnasium Bensheim) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) paired up at No. 3 to dispose of Alvaro Nazal and Joey Brandt, 6-1.

#79-ranked Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's High School) and Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) secured the point with a 6-4 triumph over Vladimir Mijatovic and Hayden Smith.

Across the board, the Waves and Bulldogs proved to be very evenly matched in singles.

Marquard posted the day's most dominant triumph, dispatching Vincent Varas 6-1, 6-0.

GU answered with a straight-set win at No. 1, but Pepperdine put away victories at No. 3 and No. 4 to clinch the dual.

Thakkar earned a hard-fought 7-4 win in the first set tiebreaker, before winning set two 6-3 against Smith.

Resident dual clincher Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) did the honors of scoring the fourth point for the fifth time this season. The freshman topped Mijatovic in three sets, 2-6. 6-2, 6-3 to put Pepperdine out of reach. Although it was Iamachkine's team-best fifth dual-clinching victory of the season, it was the first time it wasn't in the final match to finish.

Pane suffered a heartbreaking 7-6, 7-6 loss to Sergio Chip at No. 5, while Hadlich dropped an equally close match to Nick Kamisar, 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 to bring the final score to 4-3.
