NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision on the road to Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, after the Matadors came up with the game-winning run in the fifth inning.
The visiting Waves tied the game with runs in the top of the fourth and fifth, but CSUN got a home run from Chester Pak in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead for good. The Waves got the game-tying run to third in the ninth, but were unable to even the ballgame.
Rayne Raven got the win for the Matadors, while Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) suffered the loss for Pepperdine. The game was the first of five on the week for the Waves, who host Dartmouth tomorrow at 3 p.m. for another non-conference contest.
Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) homered in the top of the first to put Pepperdine ahead 1-0 early, but CSUN came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and then added another in the second to go up 3-1.
Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) recorded a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it a one-run game and then Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) doubled in a run in the fifth to even the contest at 3-3 before Pak's homer gave the advantage back to the home team.
Anderson was 2-for-4 at the plate on the day, driving in the one run with his third home run of the year. Barnett and Mitchell Gallagher (Anna Maria, Fla./IMG Academy) each had two-hit days as well. Garcia would pitch through the seventh and Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) came in to throw a scoreless eighth.
Neither team would score through the final four innings, though the Waves put a pair of runners on in both the seventh and eighth innings and then got the tying run to third in the ninth. Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) led off the top of the ninth with a double and then was sacrificed over to third. A strikeout and groundout would leave Moyer stranded, however, ending the Waves' hopes of a comeback.
CSUN posted 10 hits in the game to the Waves' nine. The Matadors had three players post multi-hit games. Raven tossed 6.2 innings in the win and Connor O'Neil threw the last 2.1 to get the save.
The loss drops Pepperdine to 9-12 on the year and CSUN improves to 15-5. The Matadors have only lost twice at home this year. After it's game against Dartmouth, the Waves host LMU for a three-game WCC series over the weekend.
