PROVO, Utah - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a heartbreaker at BYU on Saturday afternoon, losing 6-5 in extra innings. The Waves fell after taking the lead in the eighth inning.
Pepperdine scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead, but the home team Cougars came back with runs in the ninth and 10th innings to pull off the win.
The victory gives BYU a 2-1 series win in the WCC season opening three-game set. The Waves won the opener 11-3 before dropping the last two.
With the Waves trailing 4-2, Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) kicked off the eighth inning rally with an RBI triple. Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) followed with a double to bring home Qsar and then Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) gave the Waves the lead with an RBI single.
Cole Wilstead would single home the tying run for BYU in the ninth, however, and Hayden Nielsen found an RBI single in the 10th to end the game.
After tossing 2.2 strong innings of relief while the Waves made their comeback, Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) took the loss after giving up the final two runs of the game. Just one of the runs was earned, though, as the game tying run was scored after an error extended the inning.
Michael Rucker picked up the win in relief for BYU, tossing two scoreless innings.
Qsar, Caruso and Gelalich all posted two-hit days for the Waves and Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) had the one other RBI for Pepperdine. The Waves had 11 hits in the game and BYU posted 12. Nielsen and Dillon Robinson each had three-hit days for the Cougars.
The loss drops the Waves to 9-11 overall, 1-2 WCC. BYU improves to 9-11, 2-1 WCC.
Pepperdine will be back in Southern California next week as they head to Cal State Northridge on Tuesday and then welcome Dartmouth on Wednesday. LMU heads to Malibu for a three-game set over the weekend.
