PROVO, Utah - The Pepperdine baseball team opened WCC play with an offensive outburst at BYU on Thursday, blasting the Cougars 11-3 to start conference play with a win.
Jackson McClelland had another strong outing, tossing 7.0 innings, and the Waves posted 14 hits on the day to pick up the victory. Pepperdine is now 1-0 in conference play and 9-9 overall. The loss drops BYU to 7-11 overall and 0-1 WCC.
After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, the Waves jumped on BYU starter Kolton Mahoney for four runs in the second, chasing the Cougars' ace after 1.1 innings. Pepperdine got a two-run single from Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) and then the Waves drew a pair of bases-loaded walks to go up 4-1.
The Cougars answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but wouldn't score again until the sixth after the Waves had already gone up 8-2.
Pepperdine got a bunt-single RBI from Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) in the fifth and then manufactured three runs in the sixth to make it 8-2. Jefferson plated his third run of the day with an RBI-single in the sixth. Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) doubled in a run in the seventh and Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) had an RBI double in the eighth as well as part of a two-run inning. Chris Fornaci's (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) RBI-single in the eighth gave Pepperdine its 11th run.
After the Cougars scored in both of the opening frames, McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) settled in and would allow just two hits and two earned runs through his 7.0 innings pitched. The Waves' ace struck out six batters and walked just two to move to 3-1 on the year.
Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) and Mat Snider (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively. Gamboa had a pair of strikeouts.
Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) had a three-hit day, going 3-for-4 at the plate and a total of five Waves posted multi-hit games. Qsar had a pair of doubles in the game and Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) had a triple. Jeremy Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS) scored three times for Pepperdine.
Derrick Whitney had the lone multi-hit game for BYU, going 2-for-3 against the Waves. The Cougars went through six pitchers in the game.
Pepperdine and BYU will be back at it tomorrow at 5 p.m. for the second game of their three-game series. That game will be nationally televised on BYUtv.
