Pepperdine-San Diego Box Score
MALIBU, Calif. - Little went right for the Pepperdine men's basketball team on Saturday night, as San Diego went into Firestone Fieldhouse and came away with a 72-50 victory in West Coast Conference play.
The Waves (15-9, 8-5) momentarily had sole possession of third place after beating BYU on Thursday, but slid back into a tie for third after tying a season low for points and suffering their most lopsided loss of the season to the Toreros (13-12, 6-7).
Pepperdine had a three-game winning streak come to an end, and all three victories took place after coming back from substantial first-half deficits. Tonight, the Waves fell behind by as many as 11 in the first half before going into halftime down 33-24. But there would be no second-half comeback here. The Waves got no closer than seven at the start of the second half, and the Toreros maintained a double-digit lead for the final 15 minutes.
The Waves shot just 34.1% for the game, including 28.0% in the first half. San Diego had identical 13-for-27 (48.1%) performances from the field in each half. The Toreros went 8-for-19 from three, while the Waves were 1-for-7. USD outrebounded Pepperdine 38-29, and turned the Waves' season-high-tying 19 turnovers into 22 points.
Junior forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) had team highs of 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) scored 10 points.
San Diego put four players into double-figures, led by Johnny Dee's 15 points. He and Chris Anderson each had three steals and Anderson took sole possession of first place on the Toreros' all-time steals list.
Pepperdine recognized long-time broadcaster Al Epstein at halftime. Now in his 30th year calling the team's games, Epstein worked his 900th consecutive game tonight.
Pepperdine makes its final regular-season road trip next weekend. The Waves visit Portland on Thursday (Feb. 12) at 7 p.m. in a game that will be shown on TheW.tv. Then, Pepperdine is at #2 Gonzaga on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 5 p.m. That game will be shown locally on Time Warner Cable SportsNet. Both games will also have audio-only WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
