MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team scored 16 runs on 17 hits and got eight strong innings on the mound from Jackson McClelland to down Hawaii 16-1 on Friday.
Pepperdine put up eight runs in the second inning and that was more than enough for McClelland, who gave up just three hits and one run to move to 2-0 on the year. The victory moves the Waves to 5-5.
The 16 runs were the most by the team since the Waves downed LMU 16-3 on May 4 last year, and the 15-run win was the most lopsided for the program since Pepperdine beat Santa Clara 19-4 on March 24, 2013.
"Getting that kind of run support makes it a lot easier," said McClelland, who has given up just one run in 23.0 innings pitched this season. "The guys getting eight runs in the second inning was huge because I could just come out and attack hitters and worry about throwing strikes after that."
Pepperdine scored all eight of its runs with two outs in the second inning, chasing Hawaii starter Quintin Torres-Costa after 1.2 innings. Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) drove in the first run of the inning with a double and later Nick Costello (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) would follow with a two-run single. Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) also had a two-run single in the inning as the Waves had six different players drive in runs. Pepperdine sent 14 batters to the plate in the frame.
The Waves had two-run fourth and sixth innings, got one run in the fifth and capped the scoring with a three-run eighth. Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) drove in both runs in the fourth with his first career homer, making it 10-0 in favor of the Waves.
Lambert finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate, with three RBI and three runs scored. Five different Waves had multi-hit games and six players drove in multiple runs on the day. Caruso and Yamaguchi each had three-hit games.
McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) didn't give up his first hit until the sixth inning, tossing 5.2 hitless innings to start the day. Only five Hawaii players reached base in the game, with the junior righty giving up three hits and just one walk. The other reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout. McClelland's ERA is now 0.43 through three outings since becoming the Waves' Friday starter this year.
"It helped a lot to not try and strike guys out today and just let my defense work behind me. I thought we were really good defensively as well," said McClelland. "Knowing I can throw an extra fastball instead of trying to strike a guy out makes a world of difference."
Matt Lococo got the first hit of the day for Hawaii in the sixth and then Jacob Sheldon-Collins followed with a two-out RBI-single. McClelland got a popup on the very next batter to end the inning, though. Pepperdine came right back with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) and an RBI-groundout by Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS).
Torres-Costa took the loss for the Warriors, who went through three relievers in the game, to move to 0-2 on the year. Hawaii falls to 5-6.
The two teams will continue their four-game series with a 1 p.m. game tomorrow in Malibu.
