MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped its series opener with Hawaii, 15-8, on Thursday afternoon as the Rainbow Warriors scored 13 runs in the final four innings.
Pepperdine jumped out to a 4-1 lead and through five innings led 5-2, but Hawaii scored seven runs in the sixth inning and five more in the eighth to grab the win.
Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) got things going early for the Waves, driving in the first run of the day with an RBI-single in the opening frame. Anderson then followed with a two-run homer in the third to make it 4-1 in favor of the Waves.
Still leading by three, Pepperdine gave up seven runs on five hits, including two homers, in the sixth inning. Alan Baldwin hit a solo home run to lead off the inning for Hawaii and Jordan Richartz hit a three-run shot later in the frame.
It was again Richartz highlighting the five-run eighth for the visitors, hitting a two-run shot to make it 15-5.
Richartz would finish the day 3-for-5 at the plate, with five runs driven in and three runs scored. Eric Ramirez was 2-for-5 with four RBI for the Warriors.
Anderson finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI for Pepperdine, and both Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) and Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) had two-hit days.
The Waves loaded the bases in the seventh and Nick Costello (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) had an RBI-single, but Pepperdine couldn't keep the rally going, ending the inning with a double play and a popout. Two more runs in the eighth weren't enough to get the home team back in it.
Tyler Brashears got the win for Hawaii to move to 2-1 on the year and Michael Perri (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd HS) took the loss for the Waves in relief.
The loss drops Pepperdine to 4-5 on the year and moves the Warriors to 5-5. The two teams continue their four-game set tomorrow at 2 p.m.
