MALIBU, Calif. - Hutton Moyer hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the sixth, to lead the Pepperdine baseball team to a 6-3 victory over the Butler in the opener of the teams' three-game series.
All six of the Waves' runs were driven in by the long ball as Moyer drove in five runs on the day and Manny Jefferson added a solo-homer as well.
"It was good to get a few home runs today and loosen up the bats a little bit," said head coach Steve Rodriguez. "I still think we need to get a few more quality at-bats from the rest of the lineup, but that's what we're working on. Moyer has done a great job for us, though, through this beginning part of the season. We just need a few more guys to jump on that wagon now."
Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) is currently leading the team with a .412 batting average and nine RBI. He had a two-home run game last weekend as well, giving him a team-high four for the year.
Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) got things going in the fifth, breaking a scoreless tie with a solo-home run to left field. It was Jefferson's first home run this year and second of his career. Moyer then followed one batter late, also hitting a solo-shot to nearly the same spot.
The Waves loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a hit-by-pitch and two walks, bringing up Moyer with two outs. The junior second-baseman again went deep to right to bring everyone home and make it a 6-0 game.
Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) got the start on the mound for the Waves and did most of the work early, holding Butler scoreless through 7.0 innings of work. McClelland allowed just three hits and had five strikeouts in his second scoreless outing of the season. The win moves the junior righty to 1-0 on the year after taking a no-decision in a 6.0 inning outing last weekend.
"Jackson did a great job and that's what I expect out of him," said Rodriguez. "It's his time to be able to do that, take the lead for this pitching staff and make sure we have a chance to win in the seventh inning on Friday. So he did exactly what we are looking for."
Jeff Schank took the loss for Butler after going 5.0 innings and giving up 2 earned runs and five hits.
The Bulldogs battled back to load the bases in the eighth, plating two runs to make it a 6-2 game heading to the ninth. An RBI-double made it 6-3 in the final frame, but that was as close as Butler would come. Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) got a final popup to end the threat and the game.
The Waves move to 2-3 with the win and Butler falls to 0-4. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m. Sunday's game has been cancelled due to rain in the forecast.
