MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team led through seven innings, but couldn't hold on for the victory, falling to Tulane 9-5 at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Green Wave scored four runs in the eighth and then five more in the ninth to grab the come from behind win, despite a big offensive day from the Waves' Hutton Moyer.

Pepperdine jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first four innings. Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) led things off with a sacrifice fly in the first, then hit a two-run homer to right to put the Waves up 3-0. A Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) sacrifice in the fourth gave Pepperdine a four-run lead.

Waves' starter Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) held Tulane in check through six innings, giving up just four hits and no runs, while striking out six batters. McClelland worked out of bases-loaded jams in the first at third innings, getting a pair of strikeouts in both frames to strand four Green Wave runners.

McClelland exited following his sixth inning of work with a 4-0 lead, but took a no-decision following the Tulane comeback. Moyer made it 5-0 in favor of Pepperdine with his second homer of the day, hitting a solo-shot to right in the seventh inning.

After scattering five hits through the first seven innings, Tulane got three hits and four runs in the eighth, including a two-run single from Richard Carthon, to make it a one-run contest. The Green Wave started off the ninth with three hits, scoring a pair of runs to take a 6-7 lead. Five hits led to five runs in the frame.

The Waves got a pair of runners on with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't find the key hit to spark a comeback.

Dan Rankin picked up the win for Tulane after tossing two innings of relief, giving up two hits and one run. Garrett Deschamp and Carthon each drove in a pair of runs for the Green Wave.

Moyer finished the day 2-for-2 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Waves, scoring a run as well.

Pepperdine drops to 0-2 with the loss, while Tulane moves to 2-0. The teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in Malibu.
