PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team struggled on both ends for the second straight game, and the result on Thursday night was a 69-52 loss at Portland in West Coast Conference play.
The Waves (15-10, 8-6) fell back into fourth place in the WCC. The Pilots (15-10, 6-7) beat the Waves at home for the sixth time in seven years.
Overall, Pepperdine shot just 36.2% from the field, while Portland was at 50.9%. Portland also had a 39-26 advantage on the boards.
It was just a two-point game at halftime (the Pilots led 30-28), but Portland made 57.7% of its shots after the break to 32.1% for Pepperdine, and the Pilots outscored the Waves 39-24 over the final 20 minutes.
Junior forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) had his sixth double-double of the season with game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Amadi Udenyi (Oakland. Calif./De La Salle HS/St. Thomas More) sank four three-pointers and scored 14 points, and sophomore guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) had nine points and five assists. But, the rest of the Waves combined to score just 11 points.
Five Pilots scored in double-figures, led by Kevin Bailey and Alec Wintering with 15 points apiece.
Pepperdine had a brief lead early and went ahead by three points at 9-6 after two straight Davis baskets. But, a 12-3 run made it 18-12 in the Pilots' favor, and they wouldn't trail again. Portland's biggest lead of the first half was seven at 22-15, though the Waves closed the gap to two points several times toward the end of the half, including 30-28 at the break.
It was still a two-point game at 34-32 after another Davis basket with 16:26 to play, but the Pilots scored the next six points. It was just a four-point contest at 42-38 with 11:54 left, though Portland then scored seven straight points.
Udenyi gave the Waves hope by hitting consecutive three-pointers and cutting the deficit in half to 54-48 with eight minutes left, but Portland went on another 7-0 run and the Waves didn't have another comeback in them. Pepperdine was outscored 15-4 over the final 7:45.
After picking up big wins against Saint Mary's and BYU, the Waves have since lost 72-50 at home to San Diego, followed by the defeat in Portland.
Pepperdine played without its two freshmen that have seen the most action this season: guard Shawn Olden (Tulsa, Okla./Union HS) and forward A.J. John (Santa Rosa, Calif./Maria Carrillo HS). They were sidelined due to an ankle injury and an illness, respectively.
