MALIBU, Calif. - Although the Pepperdine men's tennis team defeated Boise State in a come-from-behind effort last week, history would not repeat itself today. The #45-ranked Broncos edged the #47 Waves 4-3 on Sunday in Malibu.

The battle for the doubles point was fierce and required a come-from-behind effort on Boise State's part.

Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) and Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) paired up at No. 3 for a decisive 6-2 win, but the Waves were unable to break through at No. 1 and No. 2. The Broncos claimed 6-4 decisions on both courts to take the 1-0 lead into singles.

Boise State won the doubles point in the first meeting between the two teams, before the Waves took the dual 4-2 after a stellar singles performance.

Once again, Pepperdine regained some momentum in singles, but the Broncos remained tough down the stretch to hold on for the dual victory.

Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) dispatched Thomas Tenreiro 6-0, 6-3 on Sunday in Malibu, bettering his previous 6-4, 7-6 result against the Bronco last week.

At No. 3, Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's HS) put the Waves ahead 2-1. The senior was dominant in his 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Toby Mitchell.

Boise State tied the score 2-2, following Abe Hewko's narrow 7-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 6.

Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) fought from behind to take a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 win against Lewis Roskilly, but the Broncos charted a win at No. 4 nearly simultaneously to keep the score locked, 3-3.

The deciding match came down to Menichella and Garrett Patton on court two. The pair had exchanged sets, but the Wave was down a break in the third, 1-3, when play wrapped on courts four and five. Menichella challenged Patton for every hold of serve, but could not come up with the break he needed. The sophomore Wave saved one match point to tie the game score at deuce, but Patton held serve to win 6-4 and clinch the dual for Boise State.

The Waves will be off next week and back in action on February 14 when they travel to Florida to face Miami. Pepperdine's next home match is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18 against San Diego State.
