LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's soccer team played its eighth overtime game of the season on Saturday, falling in the 93rd minute to LMU, 1-0, in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup game.
The eighth overtime contest is a program record as the Waves end the regular season with a loss. Pepperdine finishes the regular season with an 8-9-2 overall record and 3-6 WCC mark. LMU closes with a 13-5-1, 7-2 WCC record.
In an even match throughout, the game-winning goal came off a corner kick early in overtime. LMU sent the ball into the box and the Lions' Sarah Sanger had the ball bounce her way and was able to pop it into the net to end it.
The win gives LMU a second-place finish in the WCC.
The teams played scoreless through the first half, with each team getting one shot on goal. LMU fired off seven shots in the opening period, while the Waves had four.
Pepperdine came out firing in the second half, holding the majority of the possession early in the period and creating the bulk of the chances through the first 20 minutes.
The Waves best chance came in the 69th minute when Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) made a run into the right side of the box and got off a shot that was stopped by LMU keeper Charlee Pruitt. With Pruitt still on the ground, the rebound went to Taylor Alvarado (Santa Paula, Calif./Santa Paula HS), but her shot was blocked by an LMU defender with no one behind her.
LMU threatened late in regulation, getting a ball into the box in the 76th minute, but Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) came out and took the ball right off the Lions' player's head to stop the attack.
The Lions again had a pair of good chances in the 86th minute. Jocelyn Blankenship got the ball behind the Waves' defense, but Seabert was there to make the save. Shortly after, LMU sent a cross into the box and had two players with open looks at the goal, but the Lions couldn't get a head on the ball and it was cleared.
Pepperdine had a 5-4 shot advantage in the second half as both teams put two shots on goal.
The Waves played through an up and down season in which they picked up wins over Wisconsin and Arizona, as well as a draw against Virginia in non-conference play. Pepperdine posted eight shutouts on the year and gave up 18 goals in 19 games.
The Waves return all but three players from this year's squad, moving forward with the majority of its young core.
