PRINCEVILLE, Kaua'i, Hawai'i " Frederick Wedel of the Pepperdine men's golf team began defense of his 2014 Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational title with a 4-under 68 on Monday, putting him into a tie for second place.
Pepperdine is in a tie for third place as a team after a 4-under 284 at the par-72 Princeville Makai Golf Club. The Waves are tied with Cal Poly and they trail only the two highest-ranked teams in the field, #3 Wake Forest (10-under) and #21 Alabama (7-under).
The second round is on Tuesday and the third and final round is on Wednesday.
Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), a senior, shot a school-record 20-under to win this event last year. He's not quite on the same pace, but is still in a very good position after the first round. Wake Forest's Cameron Young leads the tournament after a 6-under 66.
Wedel had a total of seven birdies on the day, including both of his first two holes, and two of his last three. The 33rd below-par round in his career gave him sole possession of eighth place on the Waves' all-time list.
Freshman Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) also had a very good day, as his 3-under 69 put him into a tie for sixth place. He posted four birdies against just one bogey.
Junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) is tied for 33rd place at 73, freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) is tied for 43rd at 74 and junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) is tied for 51st at 75. Theegala had an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole.
Both Wedel and Geibel are past winners of this event (Geibel did it in 2013 while he was a freshman at Louisville).
