MALIBU, Calif. -- Lamond Murray Jr. scored a career-high 23 points on 11-for-13 shooting and 12 of the 13 Pepperdine men's basketball players scored as the Waves routed San Diego Christian, 91-49, in Firestone Fieldhouse on Monday night.
The Waves (1-1), who never trailed, made nine of their first 10 shots and ended up hitting on 58.2% of their attempts from the field, while holding the Hawks to 26.2% shooting. All 13 Waves recorded at least one assist.
"Our defense was the biggest thing," Pepperdine Coach Marty Wilson said. "Our guys played hard, stuck with the game plan, understood their personnel and didn't allow them to do what they wanted to do. Our guys were locked in."
Pepperdine was the nation's second-ranked team in three-point field goal percentage defense last season and the Waves held the Hawks without a three-pointer on 19 attempts. San Diego Christian had made 57.7% of its threes (15-for-26) in its first two games.
Murray (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS), a junior guard, scored baskets on each of the Waves' first four possessions. The Waves made their first five shots and nine of their first 10 en route to a 20-8 lead after 6 1/2 minutes. The Waves went up by 20 a number of times in the first half and went into the halftime break with a 46-29 lead.
It was 64-33 about five minutes into the second half. Then, the Waves didn't give up a field goal for more than 10 minutes, and the lead swelled to as many as 48 points at 82-34 with seven minutes to play after an 18-1 run. Pepperdine had four walk-ons on the floor with about nine minutes to go, and all five walk-ons played the final 6 1/2 minutes.
Senior forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) and freshman forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) both scored 14 points.
The Waves were able to get to repeatedly get to the basket and accumulated 56 points in the paint, and were also effective from the outside, making six of 10 three-pointers. Pepperdine also had a 51-35 edge in rebounding.
The 91 points were the most scored by the Waves since January 29, 2011, and a 94-88 victory over San Francisco.
Because of differences between NCAA and NAIA rules, Pepperdine is counting this as an official game, while San Diego Christian will record it as an exhibition.
Pepperdine next plays at UCLA on Thursday (Nov. 19) at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks, and fans can listen to Pepperdine Hall of Famer Al Epstein on WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
