MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's soccer team broke out of its scoring drought in a big way on Friday, beating Gonzaga 4-0 at home thanks to a pair of goals from freshman Christina Settles and a goal and an assist from Hailey Harbison.
The Waves ended a streak of three-straight 1-0 losses with the emphatic win at home, moving to 7-6-2 overall and 2-3-0 in WCC play. Gonzaga falls to 2-9-5, 1-4-1 WCC.
"We've been waiting for a result like this," said head coach Tim Ward. "For the last two games I thought we played quite well, but we just couldn't get the ball to go into the back of the net. Today we switched some things around in terms of personnel and lineup and it paid dividends."
Settles (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside HS) broke the scoring drought with her first collegiate goal in the 14th minute. The first-year forward gathered a failed clearance attempt from Gonzaga, dribbled past a defender and sent a shot across the box that tucked just inside the left post for a goal.
Settles' score was all the Waves would need as Pepperdine picked up its seventh shutout of the year. Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) was forced to make just four saves in goal as the Waves held possession for much of the game. The most dangerous challenge by Gonzaga came in the 71st minute when Seabert got just enough of a hand on a shot to send it wide right.
The Waves would add a second goal before the half when Harbison (Rancho Penasquitos, Calif./Westview HS) received a long pass from Courtney Assumma (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) and beat the Gonzaga keeper over the top for the 36th minute goal. It was Harbison's first of the year and the first assist this year for Assumma.
Pepperdine would add two goals in the second half, getting the first one early from Bri Visalli (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS). Visalli got on the end of a sharp pass in the box from Harbison, took one touch and sent home the shot for her third goal of the year. The strike came just three minutes into the second half.
Settles then finished off the scoring in the 74th minute, getting a pass from Taylor Alvarado (Santa Paula, Calif./Santa Paula HS) and then sidestepping a defender before rifling a shot into the left side of the net.
"It was great to see Christina get her first two collegiate goals today," said Ward. "She's been excellent for us in conference and it just seemed like it was only a matter of time before she broke through. We were also able to move Hailey up top today and that paid off. She's like a bird set free when she gets up there, so it was really good to see her get things going as well."
The 4-0 win was the largest scoring output of the year for Pepperdine.
The Waves stay home this weekend, hosting Portland for the team's final regular-season home game of the year on Sunday at 1 p.m. Pepperdine will honor its three seniors before the game.
