
Wedel, Men's Golf Have Big Day at MacKenzie Invitational

FAIRFAX, Calif. " Records and near-records highlighted Monday's first two rounds of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational for the Pepperdine men's golf team, which stands in third place with a score of 23-under.
The 23-under is the best 36-hole score in program history. The Waves shot a total of 545 (267-278) at the par-71 Meadow Club. Pepperdine is seven shots back of host California and one behind San Jose State. Those three teams plus fourth-place Arizona State will be paired up on Tuesday and will tee off the third and final round at 8:50 a.m.
Pepperdine's score of 17-under in the first round was one shot shy of the 18-hole team record. The Waves will be aiming to break the 54-hole school record of 31-under on Tuesday.
Senior Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) is tied for second place overall in the tournament, two shots back of the leader. Wedel has an 11-under 131 (64-67), which ties him for the second-best individual score in program history after 36 holes. Wedel set that record with a 17-under last season.
Wedel had a total of eight birdies during his 7-under 64 morning round (the 7-under ties the seventh-best single round in program history but is only the third-best round in Wedel's college career). He then had two eagles and two birdies during a 4-under 67 in the afternoon.
Freshman Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) is tied for 19th with a 5-under 137 (65-72), freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) is tied for 24th with a 4-under 138 (69-69), junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) is tied for 29th with a 3-under 139 (69-70) and junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) is tied for 40th with a 1-under 141 (69-72).
Eight of Pepperdine's 10 rounds on the day were below-par, and the other two were only 1-over.
Cootes had five birdies and two eagles during his 6-under 65 during the morning round, and five more birdies in the afternoon. Theegala had five birdies in both rounds. McManus had four birdies in the first round, then two eagles and a birdie in the second round. Geibel had a total of six birdies on the day.
