MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team hosted its annual John Scolinos Alumni Game and Awards Dinner this past weekend.
The current Waves came away victorious in the alumni game and Matt Maurer was awarded the John Scolinos Award at the dinner that followed.
The current Waves jumped out to a 5-0 lead early and rode the pitching of freshman Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and junior Evan Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) to victory in the afternoon alumni game. The Waves scored five runs through the first three innings before the alumni pitching settled in. Freshman Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) capped the scoring for the Waves with a home run to dead center in the final frame.
The alumni scored their lone run on a homer to right by 2014 alum Austin Davidson. Nine different former Waves got their chance on the mound against the current Pepperdine hitters.
At the annual awards dinner that followed, 2014 alum Matt Maurer was given the John Scolinos Award. Given annually since 2005, the John Scolinos Award recognizes one Pepperdine Baseball student-athlete for his exemplary behavior during a season or career. The recipient is honored for demonstrating strong character traits, including humility, resourcefulness, loyalty, honesty, work ethic, Christian behavior and sportsmanship.
Maurer played for Pepperdine from 2011-2014, emerging as a regular cog in the Waves' rotation in helping the team to an NCAA Super Regional appearance last season. Over the course of his four years in Malibu, Maurer pitched 251.2 innings, picking up 42 starting assignments and 70 total appearances. As a senior this past season, he compiled a career-low 3.04 ERA, making 12 starts and 19 appearances to earn All-Conference honorable mention for the WCC Champs. As a four-year fixture on the mound, Maurer finished his career with 15 wins, 165 strikeouts and a 4.04 ERA.
